🦠💥 Outbreak in the Classroom! 💥🦠
This week, Mr. Pagawisan’s Sophomore Biology class took a closer look at how antibiotic resistance spreads among bacteria—using a creative and engaging marble simulation!
Each student received a paper bag representing a bacterial cell, filled with marbles that stood for plasmids—small rings of DNA found in bacteria. Some marbles were green, symbolizing antibiotic resistance genes, while others were red or black, representing other genetic traits.
Through three rounds of marble exchange, students mimicked the process of conjugation, where bacteria connect and share genetic information. Just like in nature, antibiotic resistance spread from just a few “bacteria” to many others in the classroom! 🦠➡️🦠
This activity highlighted how quickly resistance can move through a bacterial population—and why it’s a growing concern in the real world. A fun and meaningful way to learn about genetics, microbiology, and the importance of responsible antibiotic use. 💊⚠️

Don't forget about the Battle in the Badlands Lacrosse Tournament this weekend! The first game starts today at 12 pm as the Montana Grizzlies face off against the North Dakota State Bison!

All three worked on Mrs. Hoagland's “hey let’s try this project” experiment, a repurposed stock tank coffee table. And to top it off they were in the top 4 of showmanship of the JAM Show and Top Showmen in the Outdoor Recreational division. Connley showed his folding sheep pannels for a blue in the livestock division. To get blue ribbons on the project they have to score 90-100 points on the judging rubric.
